There are many different types and sizes of conveyors, with some stretching only a few feet and others going on for miles.

An integrated factory wide conveyer system can move products seamlessly from their delivery into stores to the production floor, through the different facets of manufacturing and inspection, through packaging, and finally deliver them at their distribution point.

While there are some common materials handling chores which can be handled by standard conveyors, most industries will need conveyors which have been specifically designed for their applications. Even companies in the same industry may choose to have their conveyers configured differently, for example one could choose a floor level conveyor system while the other choose use an overhead system.

There are many different types of conveyers, including bucket, pneumatic, mechanical, chain, screw, and belt. There are also many different materials used to manufacture the parts of these systems including rubber, steel, stainless steel, plastic, aluminum, and brass. There are many factors which go into determining which materials to use when building the conveyor system including the run speed of the equipment, the type of materials to be placed on the conveyor, including their size and weight, and various operation conditions for the system.

Experts are often needed in order to determine which industrial conveyor system is best for a particular application. Prior to designing a system they will study the current operations, and take into account growth potential. They will also look at such factors as the comparative costs of different systems and materials and the pros and cons of each within this particular operation. Turnkey jobs, which include designing, manufacturing, and installing the system, are taken on by conveyor manufacturers.

When it comes to industrial conveyors and their parts there are a large amount of strict specifications. Many times more than one industry standard will need to be considered and applied. In the food processing industry, for example, both manufacturing and FDA rules will need to be taken into account when designing and building the system.
